Given the sensitive nature of a psychologist’s work, it is perhaps helpful to first share feedback that I have consistently received over the years from my clients.  Despite the sense of vulnerability that many people experience upon beginning therapy, I am often told by my clients that they are surprised at how quickly they felt comfortable, safe, and at ease with me.  People see me as someone who they can relate to, share with, and even laugh with as they begin to connect to their own strengths and resources.

This human connection is essential in the field of psychotherapy as research strongly supports the idea that the strength of the relationship between client and therapist predicts successful change in therapy.  I strive to make this connection a priority with every person I work with, making the work I do incredibly rewarding and powerful for both my clients and myself.

I believe change occurs differently for each unique individual, depending on one’s personal background and how he or she experiences his or her problem.  For example, some people are very logical in their thinking and they prefer we use techniques and strategies that shift their thinking (which often results in feeling better too).  On the other hand, some people feel more connected to their emotions and prefer we take more of an “emotion-focussed” perspective.  Many people benefit from work related to thoughts and feelings as well as interventions from a range of other therapeutic models.

Together with my clients, we explore these factors carefully to develop a treatment plan that honours the unique experience of the client in a way that feels both comfortable and appropriate.  Based on my interest in how people make meaning out of their experience – I work to help clients make sense of their struggle.  My goal is that each client walks away from therapy with personal insights and tools that empower them to move forward in life with more self-compassion, motivation, and confidence.
